Continuum Infinitum (video loop)

vimeo

Resolutions available 4096x4096 (4k), 4096x2160 (super HD), 1920x1080, 1280x720 Continuum Infinitum (c) 2012 by Ben Ridgway "Continuum Infinitum" unfolds before your eyes by revealing finer and finer details emanating from a single point. It is a meditation on the mechanics of time and space as infinite and seamless processes. The film is designed to loop so it essentially has no beginning and no end. Please download and try looping it :) To watch at 1080p I recommend downloading it to ensure smooth playback. This is caused by the motion after-effect (MAE). It is a visual illusion experienced after viewing a moving visual stimulus for a time (tens of milliseconds to minutes) with stationary eyes, and then fixating on a stationary stimulus. The stationary stimulus appears to move in the opposite direction to the original (physically moving) stimulus. The motion aftereffect is believed to be the result of motion adaptation. Explanation: Neurons coding a particular movement reduce their responses with time of exposure to a constantly moving stimulus; this is neural adaptation. Neural adaptation also reduces the spontaneous, baseline activity of these same neurons when responding to a stationary stimulus. One theory is that perception of stationary objects, for example rocks beside a waterfall, is coded as the balance among the baseline responses of neurons coding all possible directions of motion. Neural adaptation of neurons stimulated by downwards movement reduces their baseline activity, tilting the balance in favor of upwards movement.

K-9_TOPOLOGY: ECCE CANIS

vimeo

K-9_topology: ECCE CANIS dwells on the interaction of biology and culture as the central concept in understanding of parallel evolution between humans and dogs, throughout which the latter have been one of the key selection pressures for humans to develope empathy. Within this frame, I am interested in metabolic pathway processes that trigger emotional motif which made the two species able to tame themselves together for thousands of years. Physiological core of the paradigm dwells in the connection between the sense of smell and serotonin pathway predispositions which result as a hormone accumulation feedback in interaction between both species. Since 32.000 years ago, humans have had been developing a lack of perception of smell which decreased inversely with the development of culture that predisposed behavioral skills in verbal/sound and visual communication, while dogs are still not percepting the world on the concept of causality. Therefore the phenomenology of this juxtaposition lays in the question: how come that we are able to evolve such emotional synergy and thus both align around a common want? The installation stands as a paraphrase of the evolution of mobility and the phenomenology of empathy. Covered in wolf fur as a cozy space, an archetypical horn is a symbol of where it all begun. The hormone serotonin of me and my dog has been transformed into an odor - as the essence of our relationship - our common mind. Public has the chance to approach the evaporation sensor filled with our mixed serotonin haze at the end of the cave, by using their smell. When smelling a single drop of serotonin, chemoreceptors in our nose, connect through amygdala and hypotalamus in our brain, by triggering a sympathetic response: back into the time of our common past and close coexistence with animals. I think futuristic visions are a core aspect of how scientists and artists should understand socioecological transformations. By combining facts of pure scientific data with the ancient cultural heritage, we can be able to rize a cross disciplinary dialogue, through public awareness on the ethics of animals and humans, to lead us towards a better recognition on potentials of the empathical technology design in our future society.
