Religious processions of Christian cultures are a ceremonial tradition practiced as ritual, celebrating a holy day or a saint. The church processions of Latin-America, often considered solemn assemblies, are revered for their accompanying bands and the extravagant decorations that adorn the effigies of those being honored. The effigies are placed atop an anda: the large platform held on the shoulders of parishioners and carried the length of the procession. Those selected to carry the anda are considered the most privileged participants of the procession. In this performance, the empty anda is carried by eight gay Peruvian men in varying stages of personal or public acceptance of their sexuality. They are confined to a structure whose weight inflicts pain and whose rigid shape imposes an unchanging, unified movement: the slow, forward sway. As an antagonist, the invisible effigy inhibits the carriers from achieving true self-acceptance and identity synthesis.
